Annual and Special Events Events

Island School Council for the Arts conducts two major fundraisers each year that help to support our programs; An Evening of the Arts and the Bold Strokes Golf tournament. Both events are executed with the help of our board, volunteers, artists, and business community.


Since 1981 ISCA hosts the annual gala, An Evening of the Arts. Local and regional artist’s works are displayed then auctioned during a fabulous evening of food, fun and socializing. This event is not only raises money but provides a delightful evening of entertainment.


Bold Strokes took place May 20th at Colleton River Plantation/ Nicklaus Course. This marked the 5th year that the Island School Council for the Arts has hosted this event. The tournament has proven to be a very successful fundraiser in which the golfers have enjoyed playing on some of our areas premier golf courses. Fantastic prizes are awarded and a silent auction help finish off the day during the post play party.


While ISCA continues to pursue grants and donations which help fund projects such as in the Patrick Dougherty Public Arts Sculpture, the organization depends on its two major fundraisers to raise the money which enable ISCA to continue to provide quality programs for our children.

 G reat Art, Great Food, Great Jazz — All the hallmarks of a ‘must attend event.’  For 2010, The Island School Council for the Arts pays tribute to the Palmer family of artists, in recognition of their generosity and many years of contribution to ISCA.  On a cool Friday evening set for February 26th, the easy strains of jazz will be heard from open doors at Robert Irvine’s eat!  Renowned NYC jazz musician Allan Harris and his accomplished quartet will provide entertainment; with art auction and gourmet dining in the metropolitan setting of Robert Irvine’s eat!   

 

In honor of the Palmers, ISCA has arranged this one-night-only premier auction, exhibiting work by nationally recognized artists Walter Palmer and Jim Palmer, Walter’s sons Wally Palmer and Kevin Palmer, Jim’s son Addison Palmer, and daughter Elise Palmer Miller. The Palmers work in oils and acrylics, bronze and fiberglass.  While they chose different mediums, their love of the Lowcountry landscape is apparent, brilliantly captured with masterful strokes and beautiful detail.  Their art is widely collected in both private and public collections.  Walter Palmer’s bronze sculptures grace resorts, homes, and public areas of Hilton Head Island with their good-natured, whimsical poses. Palmer describes his signature birds as portraits; his commissioned pieces often highlight a characteristic of the collector.  

Jim Palmer’s paintings hang in the collections of former Presidents Jimmy Carter and Dwight D. Eisenhower, museums and collectors. Immersed in natural beauty, his lush canvases magnificently exhibit his connection to the Lowcountry.  

 

Addison Palmer’s paintings are breathtaking representations of the landscape. Elise Palmer Miller also shares her love of nature on canvas.  

 

Wally Palmer’s sculptures are works in fiberglass, often incorporating ceramics. Kevin Palmer’s sculpted pieces are fluid and narrative. 

 

Guests are invited to mingle with cocktails and preview art at 6:00 p.m., prior to Harris’ opening set. The first gourmet course follows, a dynamic food experience perfected by the classical technique of Robert Irvine, host of Food Network‘s hit show Dinner Impossible fame.  Following the intermezzo course, the third course features pan-seared filet mignonettes, maytag and foie gras laced sauce hussarde. Desserts precede the premiere auction event. 

 

Next, the jazz set heats up with Harris, three-time winner of ‘New York Nightlife Award for outstanding jazz vocalist.’  

 

The Palmers have shared a longtime association with ISCA’s annual art auction fundraiser, An Evening of the Arts.  Next year marks the 30th anniversary of this event, which has for many years’ sustained ISCA’s programs.   

 

“I started donating when it was at the Episcopal Church on Pope Avenue, the auction inside, white elephant sales out front, cupcakes, anything to sell,” Walter Palmer said. “Then, there was that year the auctioneer told me I was bidding against myself.  I’d already bought the piece!”  

 

All lightheartedness aside, without the support of artists who contribute, much of ISCA’s programs would not be possible.

Promising Picassos 2010

Island School Council for the Arts proudly presents the annual Promising Picasso Student Art exhibition.  This event begins Friday March 26th and runs through Sunday, April 4th.  The works of many emerging and talented student artists will be showcased in a gallery setting and will be displayed at The Mall at Shelter Cove.  Traditionally, the wide collection of student art is beautifully presented and professionally hung and is enjoyed by the many residents and visitors during BRAVO, a month-long celebration, which features the arts and cultural heritage of the Hilton Head Island and Bluffton/Okatie regions of southern Beaufort County.  The exhibit is open to the public, daily from noon until 5:00 pm and is free of charge.

An artist reception will be held for all art teachers, students and their parents in the gallery space, which has been graciously donated by The Mall at Shelter Cove.  Parents, family, friends and visitors are invited to enjoy the works of the many artistic, talented and creative Promising Picassos, who, for many of these emerging artists may be their first of many shows!
